I've just finished the book. Apparently there are many rough, discomforting grains of sand jamming the delicate mechanism of Geoff Dyer's orbitofrontal cortex during his moving quest for pleasure/happiness in various places around the globe. And Geoff is lost : too much disappointment ! His high expectations only meet low satisfaction. The White Sands blinding him as he was walking in the heat of the national park in New Mexico sums the all experience up. As William Blake put it in his famous poem To see a world in a grain of sand... : "Man is made for joy and woe ; and when this we rightly know, thro' the world we safely go". Smart Lias will safely go better equiped with a pair of stylish sunglasses - to avoid blindness - and a useful handbag - essential to any good traveler - courtesy of Mr Rick Owens. And if it's not enough, we'll send a Warhammer army of figurines to his rescue !
