As a French citizen, I’ve been familiar with De Nerval’s poetry work at school when I was a child (we used to learn poetry pieces by heart then). I had never read “Aurelia” since last week when I’ve been informed about this upcoming conversation with Rob Doyle. Your exchange on the subject happens to be edifying and quite a coincidence as it echoes to my last visit at the Centre Pompidou in Paris for their current exhibition on surrealism. A friend of mine, who is a psychotherapist, accompanied me and was quite troubled by these many artistic expressions of “pure madness and immense suffering” (she stated as a mental health professional). I, on the contrary, was more intrigued and inspired by those uncommon visions/perceptions of our living world, which led us to have a more focused discussion on our individual psychic defense mechanisms and the way it affects our mutual reception of such creative works at some point.
Following this podcast, and as I enjoyed the reading of Threshold, I’ve ordered a copy of "Autobibliography" this week-end in its brand-new pb edition. Thank you, Glenn !
